Showers Now Open At The Source

Tom King lends a hand with the framing job during the shower construction.

The Source is pleased to announce that our showers are now operational.  Two private showers for the ladies and a mens room containing three private shower stalls and two shaving stations allow us to serve dozens daily.  This new amenity provides all that is required for cleanliness, including the soaps, towels, razors and toothbrushes, all donated by friends of The Source.  In fact, the entire project was made possible through the combined efforts of local businesses, church groups, and charitable grants.

Hygiene and the Homeless

Most of us don’t spend a lot of time thinking about personal hygiene.  It’s just habit.  We take a shower, brush our teeth, and wash our hands before we eat.  But hygiene can be quite a challenge for the homeless, in particular the working homeless.  And the lack of it contributes to more than social annoyance.  Data from 120 countries show that using soap for personal cleanliness and laundering remains a consistent factor in determining a person’s overall health.  Also, a lack of attention to personal hygiene is cited among employers as a serious issue which can inhibit job opportunities and advancement.  In our mission to help the homeless recover their lives, personal hygiene is an issue which simply cannot be overlooked or understated.  The Source is excited to be able to offer this new service free of charge to our homeless neighbors.
