The Book of Golden Deeds is an exclusive Exchange Club program that honors the quiet, good deeds of America's unsung heroes. These uncommon men and women exist in every town, going about helping others without a lot of fanfare. All the way up to the moment at the mic, the recipient of the annual award is one of the best kept secrets in the club.
Joyce Smith of the Vero Beach Exchange Club as chairman of the award had been scheming for weeks. Special guests were invited to speak on behalf of the honored couple. All were obliged to the solemn vows of secrecy. The private party lunched behind the curtain, unbeknownst to the Kings. As the proclamation went out, the partition came back.
Local clergy were invited to highlight the couple’s contributions to the community. The Reverend Michael Ward of St. Mark’s Anglican Church spoke of their courage in working with such a controversial population and the impact they have made among them over the years. The Reverend Bob Stull of Trinity Episcopal talked of their perseverance in service to the homeless and poor, earning the respect and support of the church.
The ceremony took place on August 15th at the Vero Beach Yacht Club. Son Colter King, The Source’s Ministry Coordinator, Betty Lewis, and The Source’s Admin Assistant, Sonya Morrison, were also on hand to offer their own words of acclamation. Attending in honor of the couple were parents Pat and Sally Mazza.
