Taking the Journey to Freedom in Three Phases

  • Orientation
  • Regeneration
  • Relational Ministry

Orientation

The first 30 days of the program seeks to reach three primary goals:

  1. Objective evaluation of historical coping strategies which underlie personal dysfunction and relational difficulties.
  2. A recognition of the need for personal recovery through various support groups, as well as individual counseling.
  3. The development of a plan to become financially independent and responsible by the end of the program.

Regeneration

The second phase of the program emphasizes the biblical concept of a new identity on which new coping strategies are built.  Through a variety of classes, groups, and counseling sessions, a healthy self-image is developed to counter poor self-esteem.  Utilizing biblical truth to establish a genuine sense of personal worth, this phase of the program has two main goals:
  1. To reinforce a healthy self-image by constantly reviewing the biblical truth of our new identity in Christ.  Regardless of our own performance, the opinion of others, or our current circumstances, our worth as persons never changes since it is based only on our relationship to God through Christ.  However, knowing this truth intellectually and living it out practically are two very different things.  The first goal of the regeneration phase is to restructure dysfunctional belief systems so that the truth of our new identity in Christ may be experienced on a daily basis.
  2. To overcome past failures and hurts by recognition of a new destiny and opportunities.  It is during this phase that family of origin issues and historical failures are specifically addressed.  Where possible, amends are made and reconciliation is sought with others who have been harmed by the individual.  Only by fearlessly looking at the dark side of our own past can we trust God’s grace to reveal the glory of our future.  Taking personal responsibility for our fleshly faults and failures brings the forgiveness we desperately need for personal freedom in the future.

Relational Ministry

Personal recovery is not really complete until it is demonstrated in our relationships to others.  Learning that we are truly awesome spirit beings with magnificent worth as persons is of no real value unless it liberates us to love others.  In fact, the failure to truly love others is the leading cause of doubting our own worth as persons.  For this reason, the third and final phase of the “Journey To Freedom” program is devoted to learning to relate to others in a healthy manner.  The main goals of this final phase are as follows:
  1. Recognition of the true meaning and characteristics of divine love.  Since all healthy relationships are based on divine love, it is imperative that we understand what that love really is and how it differs from the natural, humanistic love.
  2. Acceptance of the personal responsibility to love others with a divine love by actually practicing it on a daily basis.  Those in phase three of the program must learn to minister divine love to those coming along behind them.
  3. Commitment to share the message of hope and recovery as a lifestyle rather than a religious duty.  The old saying, “You can’t keep it unless you give it away,” summarizes the lifestyle necessary to maintain recovery and make the transition to true freedom.
