In order to fulfill our mission to help those who are recovering, the Life Recovery Center requires a personal commitment (90 days to nine months) from each person who enters the program. Length of stay will be determined at the initial assessment and evaluated regularly by the house manager. This commitment is made in the following three areas: financial responsibility, program participation, and personal attitude.
Financial Responsibility
It is understood that any person requiring the services of a halfway house is in desperate need of assistance in managing their finances. They must not only secure employment that will not interfere with their program, but they must also learn to be responsible with the money they earn. The first priority must be to support the very program by which they hope to recover from their dysfunction. A failure to meet this priority will undermine any further effort to recover in this program, and must be viewed as an indicator of the need for residential treatment. To become financially responsible each resident is required to adhere to the following general procedures:
-
Month 1: Work for the ministry that is feeding and housing them. Secure employment that will not interfere with their recovery program.
-
Month 2: Pay $135.00 per week to maintain support of the program. Initiate savings.
Unwillingness on the part of any resident to fulfill this initial commitment to financial responsibility will result in dismissal from the program. There can be no recovery without commitment at this most basic level. Those who seek to fulfill their commitment to financial responsibility will receive further assistance in learning to budget their money, initiate savings, provide for emergencies, prepare for the future, and enjoy the freedom from debt.
Program Participation
Recovery from a dysfunctional lifestyle demands a personal commitment to spend the time necessary to learn a brand new way of living. The various classes and meetings required by the program are the minimal level of participation needed to recover. A lack of participation in any of the scheduled meetings is viewed as unwillingness to commit to the program and, therefore, grounds for dismissal. Program participation includes the following:
-
Prompt attendance at all scheduled meetings (tardiness and/or absences are excused only in the case of illness or occasional work demands, and must be verified by the staff or employer.)
-
A willingness to participate in group discussion.
-
Completion of all homework assignments.
A commitment to participate in the program as described above is all that is required of anyone in recovery. Special consideration will be given to those who are weak academically and are in need of assistance due to learning disabilities. Individual counseling will be provided for all that enter the program.
Personal Attitude
Recovery from a dysfunctional lifestyle involves a commitment to maintaining a positive personal attitude. For example, those who enjoy the freedom from addiction have a positive attitude toward themselves and their circumstances. There are two main ways to determine the personal attitude necessary for recovery:
-
Social interaction with peers and staff, i.e. isolation vs. relational ministry
-
Content of speech, i.e. negative vs. positive.
For the welfare of each resident, their personal attitude will be consistently monitored and challenged. True recovery requires a fundamental change in the many attitudes that have been historically conditioned into us since birth. The need to challenge the attitudes and belief systems that led to our dysfunctional behavior is obvious and is, therefore, to be expected rather than avoided in this program. |
