Homelessness Shouldn’t be a Crime
Dear Friends of The Source,
Yesterday, Indian River County took a decisive and heartbreaking step by passing an ordinance that enforces the state’s new law criminalizing public sleeping and camping. This means that individuals with nowhere else to go are now at risk of arrest simply for resting in public spaces. Tragically, this ordinance’s impact became real this morning when the first person was arrested at 7 AM for violating this new law.
This is not just a statistic; it’s a human story. It’s the story of someone without a place to lay their head, facing not only the challenges of homelessness but now the weight of criminalization. This isn’t just about law enforcement; it’s about compassion, dignity, and the future of our most vulnerable neighbors.
Recently, I was reminded of the parable where Jesus left the ninety-nine sheep to tend to the one that was lost. It’s a powerful reflection of how every life matters. At The Source, we strive to follow that same calling—to seek out and care for the ones who are most in need, even when it’s difficult, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Here’s how you can make a difference:
- Donate: Your financial support helps us provide our emergency shelter beds, food services, and employment training for those in crisis.
- Volunteer: From serving meals to providing mentorship, every act of kindness brings hope and stability to someone in need.
- Advocate: Share this message with your network. Help us educate others about the challenges our homeless neighbors face and the importance of compassionate solutions.
We can’t stand by as our neighbors are criminalized for their circumstances. Together, we can push back against fear and stigma and stand up for compassion and care.
Thank you for standing with us and for being a beacon of hope in uncertain times.
